Marion County's
Silverton, Oregon has celebrated the life and
humor of Homer Davenport Since 1980.
Homer became an
internationally respected and pioneering political
cartoonist from the turn of the century, Davenport
always had a strong connection with the place he was
born and raised.
Locals fondly refer to the festival as "Homer
Days" when Homer
Davenport's hometown is filled with the
annual three-day summer festival with celebrations the whole family can
enjoy.
The Hometown Parade
on Saturday is for everyone! Includes
categories for individuals, floats, musical groups,
horses and other animals, car clubs, dance and marching
teams, civic groups, antique, custom and classic autos
plus commercial/retail advertised vehicles.

There is
nothing more important to the success of Homer Davenport
Days than the generosity of the many sponsors that step
forward each year in support. HDD is committed to
providing top-level sponsor recognition for those
participating, including our website, street banners,
media coverage, special event assignment, festival
exposure, and brochure exposure, depending on the level
of contribution.
The cornerstone of Homer Davenport Days, has always been
the Board of Directors’ commitment to returning festival
proceeds to the community in the form of charitable
contributions, while retaining a modest amount for
operating expenses. Many, many community organizations
have benefited over the years from their association
with HDD, and many recipients have returned the favor by
supporting the festival through volunteerism. |

Beautiful Silverton, Oregon
The charming town of
Silverton was founded in the Willamette
Valley in 1854. The historical and cultural aspects of
Silverton are bound to entertain travelers of all ages.
There are many art galleries, antique shops,
restaurants, and other interesting attractions to visit
and Silverton is known as the gateway to the
Silver Falls State Park (the largest state
park in Oregon). It is also home to
The Oregon Garden.
Homer Davenport Days isn't the only major festival held
in Silverton. The HDD board also hosts the Silverton Hills Strawberry Festival every
Father's Day weekend and just two weeks after Homer
Days, Coolidge-McClaine Park bustles again with the
Silverton Fine Arts Festival. Mt. Angel hosts
the
Oktoberfest celebrations every September.
Davenport's presence can also be seen on view in the
Silverton Country Museum. The
Silverton Mural Society maintains two
Davenport-related masterpieces on the walls of
Silverton, both by local artists: a biographical
mural by David McDonald (First St., near
Lewis St.) and the Davenport's Arabian Quest centennial
mural by Lori L. Webb (Water St. on the historic Wolf
Building).
The newly developed
GeerCrest Foundation, is preserving the local
history of Waldo Hills, and Homer is an important part
of the archival collection on the GeerCrest site. The
highly well regarded Davenport Arabian Horse bloodline
is continually promoted by
Davenport Arabian Horse Conservancy and (in
Oregon) by Central Pacific Al Khamsa. |
